Activities
Mochitsuki (Rice Cake Pounding)
It’s a traditional Japanese ritual where steamed rice is pounded into a sticky paste using a large wooden mallet.
The resulting mocha can be enjoyed in various sweet and savory dishes. (*The mochitsuki event will provide vouchers exclusively for breakfast guests.)
Fukuwarai (Funny Face Game)
Fukuwarai is a traditional Japanese New Year game.
Participants are blindfolded and try to place facial features—such as eyes, a nose, and a mouth—on a face outline.
Since the features often end up in funny or mismatched positions, everyone laughs at the results.
The game is simple and enjoyed by people of all ages.
It’s played for fun during family gatherings and represents starting the year with smiles and happiness.
Kakizome (First Calligraphy)
A traditional Japanese New Year custom where people write their calligraphy.
Kakizome believed to bring good luck and is often a way to set intentions for the year ahead.
Omikuji (Fortune Slip)
One of a few popular activities for New Year in Japan is omikuji.
It’s a fun activities to peek a bit of your luck in the year ahead.
Wanage (Ring Toss Game)
This is a fun and simple game where players throw rings onto a target.
With the aim is to land the rings on a peg or bottle.
Kendama
Kendama is a traditional Japanese skill toy.
You perform tricks by catching the ball in the cups or on the spike of the handle.
